We hope you had a great Valentine’s Day! For many it’s day for romance – a dozen red roses, chocolates, dinner for two. There may even be a few proposals of marriage before the day is out. The rose is a symbol of eternal love so it’s no surprise that roses are a popular choice at weddings – from the bouquet to the buttonholes to the table arrangements.
We love seeing how our marquees are decorated for a wedding and, working with some of the best florists around, the floral artistry never fails to impress. Carrie Macey, who runs the Topiary Tree , works closely with each couple to ensure that the choice of flowers suits their personalities and will achieve the look they want for their wedding.
“Some couples have a particular flower that they want me to use, others are more influenced by colour, but roses really are a perennial favourite for weddings. Coming up with a fresh design is never an issue because there are so many varieties of rose – from small-headed rambling roses to modern hybrids with multiple petals, there is so much choice.”
How to dress a marquee with flowers
A marquee can seem like a big space to make intimate and romantic, but it doesn’t daunt a talented florist. Carrie says: “I really enjoy working in marquee spaces, there is so much that can be done when you work with the structure itself. I like suspending floral hoops from the marquee ceiling – roses provide the main visual interest and greenery adds body to the display. Trailing ivy is great for adding movement, and the trailing has a way of visually reducing the height of the marquee, which helps create a more intimate feeling. And there are so many ways of adding colour and interest around the perimeter. The marquee poles are a gift for a florist, with opportunities to create garlands and displays that add interest and colour.
“Using flowers to dress the marquee interior is also a great way of connecting the outside with the inside. Roses, stocks, phlox and hydrangea combined with mixed foliage gives all the visual cues of an English country garden – a perfect complement to the grounds in which the marquee is sited. Translated throughout the marquee, including the table displays and cake table, it’s a beautiful look that will wow every wedding guest. And the scent of roses will fill the marquee!”
